Each of us is engaged in the mucky minutiae of breathing, spitting, crying and bleeding. / Cashmere, silk, linen, wool, cotton, stainless steel, copper, hemp, bamboo, pineapple and even paper. / There are all manner of morals lurking behind the surface of art. / Something in-between The Sims and a contemporary art installation? / Large conglomerates with hundreds of stiletto-shod employees. / Including a new patented system that allows for a figure to be fixed in five different positions at the push of a button.&#38;nbsp;/ Sexual potency, gender play, fashion mannequin, Afrofuturism, extra-terrestrial, punk performer, flirty chanteuse, Black androgyne. / Do you remember the first time you ever noticed clothing? / In their loveliness is tenderness, in their tenderness brutality. / It’s too easy to dismiss what is photographed here as “quirky” in a world so obsessed with identikit style. / It has pixelated human emotion, delivered instant news and promoted tidy eyebrows and sleepy kittens ever since. / &#38;nbsp;But how different do any of us really look? / Fashions may change but nothing changes in fashion. / We see them standing in a queue, raucously raking though glossy magazines, waiting to enter peepshow booths that become confessionals where models contorted into small-boxed sets share their deepest insecurities. / A specially installed swing – carved from English oak with a padded, laser-cut ponyskin wall rest / But how do you avoid falling into that trap? / A hooded cotton jersey zip-up top is as ubiquitous as it is unnerving, the star of modern day parables of social inequality, youth culture, racism, privacy, fear and style. / Ancestors, two parents, bride and bridegroom, a youth, a young girl and something which she resolves as the “ultimate form.” / So chairs have some kind of universal credibility, both functional and aesthetic? / (1) Single lines produce an impression of planar surfaces; (2) single lines render the composition static; and (3), double, or multiple, lines have a dynamic effect by ensuring “a continuity of related and interrelated rhythm in space.” / The blink of an eye, the tap of a finger, the quiver of a toe have begun to hold a new kind of power. / Part protest, part trance 










the lyrics have taken on a new pathos. / In it, she is Orlando; at once masculine and feminine, buttoned-up and unzipped. Bathed in light, her hair is glossy, her neck unadorned. There is a slight knowing curve of the mouth. / Any sentimental British compassion replaced with a harder, no-nonsense approach to material possessions. / A silver leg-shaped pendant dangles from a thin gold chain strung around a naked neck. / Two fluorescent bin-men sit on smooth stone benches, staring into tiny phones. Givenchy has plastered matte black vinyl to its shopfront. Two ornate metal garden chairs sit empty in the window of Michael Kors beside a weary lemon tree. / Is it important to create work that is very new or work that is very now? / Although fluent in the romanticism of simplicity, the softly spoken designer is sentient to the risk that it could be seen as dull. / The lurid – salacious paparazzi and magazine spreads fizzing with scoop and gossip.

BLESS N°05 Subscribe BLESS (1998)



BLESS is best explored as a speculative project for a different kind of fashion making. The creative platform established 26 years ago by designers Desiree Heiss and Ines Kaag sits directly within (or outside of) all of the creative disciplines and resists formal categorisation. BLESS products are rigorous, fantastic, poetic, spiritual and sometimes, joyfully odd.


Formally trained in fashion, both Heiss and Kaag were suspicious of the discipline’s glittery veneer from the start. The period in which they met – the early 1990s – felt like a particularly free time for young designers and artists. Despite an underlying sense of both climate and political crises, things seemed possible. In fashion, the left shoulder on a two-button jacket could be yanked up 10 inches and it would be accepted; a skirt could become an object for the home. Upcycling army surplus was pragmatic, not profound. A transgressive naiveté flourished and as a result “the nineties” have become shorthand for bold ideas previously uncomplicated by the engulfing scale of the internet. Today, even the rambunctious pseudo-intellectual silhouettes of Rei Kawakubo have been flattened into little more than bejewelled seasonal blips. The very notion of being – let alone surviving as – a ‘conceptual fashion designer’ has been erased with every software update.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;


Demimoorebag, life, wondered


Despite BLESS not being underground nor unknown, it feels like a challenge to try and get to know what it is or who Heiss and Kaag are. They have enjoyed a level of personal anonymity that is difficult to imagine in our byzantine digital age. Early on they refused to have their portraits taken, which Heiss says was ‘almost like an educational statement to explain that the core of our work is not about us as people. It's really about what we want to say with our products.’ After releasing a series of accessories, their first full clothing collection – BLESS N°09 Merchandising – was offered in 1999 as an answer to the dilemma of persisting press requests for portraits of the designers and included t-shirts with their pictures on. Two years ago they decided to make a new product-cum-portrait, this time creating a handloom jacquard of their merged faces. ‘Supposedly, BLESS is a child – now of 26 years old – which is a great age,’ Kaag says. ‘This is BLESS today.’ 


When the pair first met in 1993 at an international competition in Paris they had not been used to the rhythm and demands of creative collaboration. Heiss, studying at Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna, navigated the English eccentricity of guest professor Vivienne Westwood with the sensual rigour of Helmut Lang and later costume designer Frida Parmeggiani. Kaag meanwhile spent her time at Fachhochschule für Kunst und Design in Hanover exploring what ‘innovation’ meant within the context of fashion. They were immediately drawn to the handcrafted alchemy of each other’s work: Heiss using crochet and Kaag felt. 


They kept in touch and worked on an edition of 20 sheer summer tops in 1995. They spread posters around Vienna and Berlin of collaged women wearing them with only the name BLESS and a telephone number underneath. Soon after, using money borrowed from their parents, they placed ads in i-D, Self Service and Purple Fashion listing the same number next to a Polaroid of the first BLESS product: a fur wig. Martin Margiela commissioned the duo to make more out of old fur coats for his A/W 1997 show. BLESS’s creative output was – and is – fuelled by a kind of rational naiveté.


When they first had the idea to collaborate, they penned a manifesto: 


‘BLESS is a visionary substitute to make the near future worth living for. She is an outspoken female – more woman than girl. She’s not a chosen beauty, but doesn’t go unnoticed. Without a definite age she could be more between her mid twenties and forties. B. hangs around with a special style of man. She has no nationality and thinks that sport is quite nice. She’s always attracted by temptations and loves change. She lives right now and her surroundings are charged by her presence. She tends to be future orientated.



BLESS is a project that presents ideal and artistic values by products to the public.’ 


In the same way we try to give bodies to the chatbots and A.I. machines intruding on our lives today, BLESS was personified as the ideal woman of the 1990s. A free spirited and open minded, confident somebody. Heiss and Kaag knowingly created an avatar to protect themselves from the disturbance of celebrity. ‘When 10 years had passed, we were reflecting on that manifesto and asking if it was still valid. We thought that as we were older, we wouldn’t have done it in the same way but now, after another 10 years has passed, it somehow feels valid again,’ Kaag says. 


‘When we started to work together, the urge to define who we are and what we have in common was important and that's when this character appeared,’ Heiss says. ‘The manifesto talks about things that were dear to us and also some wishful thinking… how we would like to be. It was not intended to be the starting point for the outside, it was the starting point for us, to understand what we were. We wanted to establish our own values and invent a world – and everyday life – that we could live.’ 


These values were designed to negate certain norms. Heiss and Kaag call what they do a ‘made-to-measure profession’, it is something that they have grown with and into. Whose needs would they serve? How would they make money and survive? BLESS was ‘a pot where you could put in wishes for a better future’. They were realistic in what they did not want. Kaag says: ‘Observing what’s happening today, young people in general tend to dream for bigger things but it's very rare that people take the time to sketch out a schedule for the week or for the year on how you would like to live and work. This is something we did in a very playful way in the beginning, wanting to take the time to think about a product and then release it the moment it was finished.’ Yet quickly it became apparent that the structure of the industry – its seasons – helped to formalise their way of working rather than hinder it. ‘It took me years to really accept that the seasonal rhythm made more sense for us, but this was good because otherwise we would have been far too slow’ Kaag says. 

Armpitshirt, thought, feel


Too easily BLESS can seem like an esoteric post-modernist charade. A wooden hairbrush which has flowing locks of human hair in place of bristles is not an inert Surrealist object but rather a tool whose purpose is to preserve hair as a souvenir, a practice associated with Victorian mourning traditions. Chairs designed for BLESS N°07 Living-Room Conquerers (1999) on which denim or cotton-Lycra is held taut by tall fiberglass sticks maintain their functionality despite looking entirely new. Since 2005 Heiss and Kaag have continued to transform the appearance of the electronic cords, cables, and chargers omnipresent in all our homes by threading them with wooden beads, artificial stones and plastic bangles. ‘There was always this questioning of “is this a good idea?”’ Kaag says. ‘That’s why we started to develop all these side activities and this dilettantism to work with things that we didn’t know. This is something we are proud of, more than having a certain career in interior design or fashion or whatever. What has not changed over these 26 years is that we are better in doing things than talking about them.’ 


The duo are impressed by the sheer fact that they still exist. The complexity of creative thinking which BLESS has applied to everything from their retail spaces (a residential flat in East Berlin) to the things they make has established a new way of contributing to the worlds of fashion, art, interior design and philosophy. ‘There has been no recipe or even anything we wanted to transmit but we’re so lucky that we’ve found the glimpse of how life could work for us,’ Heiss says. ‘If you take your own values and your own needs as a base for whatever you create, it's necessarily meaningful. It's not hollow. And it's also tough in a way because of course, you fail permanently.’ The duo have always approached BLESS as an ongoing research project that will eventually come to an end. 

Important, understand, point


Presently Heiss and Kaag are working on their third printed volume Celebrating 25 Years of Always Stress with BLESS N°42 – N°74 which will be released this summer. Like the two books before it (Celebrating Ten Years of Themelessness: N°00 – No°29 (2006) and Retroperspective Home N°30 – N°41 (2010) published by Sternberg Press) the book brings together their archive alongside illustrations, photography and special projects. BLESS’s relationship to its archive is pragmatic. Since the start Heiss and Kaag have numbered their projects, so it is easy to follow the thread of each idea and trace how they connect. The rhythm of the fashion cycle and life’s changing moods reveal themselves via BLESS’s interventions. The concerns of today – the climate crisis, the fashion system, consumerism, capitalism, individualism, and collaborative networks – are present throughout their archives. Their work – no matter how strange or fantastic – pulsates with a contented, benevolent rigour whether presented within the halls of an international museum or at a child’s 7th birthday party. 


The manifesto composed at the conception of BLESS has changed in meaning and relevance with each passing decade – as they approach a third, their ‘more woman than girl’ has aged. She has in some ways become more formal, more complete. So what are her interests now? Kaag says: ‘it has entirely changed but on the other hand, I am still questioning the same things.’ Perhaps then it is not about how things change but how they evolve. ‘When we did the first book, I can remember that the reactions to our things were not really that great but then, 10-15 years later, people come and say “Oh, it was so fantastic what you did back then!” and like with every year you evolve, of course you can build on that corpus that you created. It gives more density,’ Heiss says. ‘I have the feeling what we do now is more consistent. We can work with stuff retrospectively; we can feel inspired by our own products and do new versions using a vocabulary that we have created. We salute a kind of pragmatic, troubleshooting kind of creativity that has to serve a need.’


This term “creativity” is a contentious one today, splattered liberally across the western world as a kind of big blue pill for happiness. There’s a common misunderstanding that “creativity” stands for freedom and leisure time. ‘It's extremely boring,’ Kaag says. ‘You must be creative to run a business, maybe more than to decide if a jacket should be red or blue or in leather or whatever – that is not the creativity that we need. Creativity is more about how to survive in a world without losing patience.’

Is it the pose that makes a fashion picture? Maybe it is the make-up and hair and nails? Is it defined by the texture of a pavement or the colour of a wall? Is it about the clothes? The works presented here by Hugo Comte, Thomas Albdorf, Feng Li, Valeria Herklotz, John Yuyi, Campbell Addy and Jet Swan are technically fashion pictures because they have been made mostly for the commercial context of a magazine, billboard or advertisement, yet there is something else going on. On their own, either yanked from the spine of a magazine, or as they are here (single jpegs on a screen), these pictures perform in a different way. They exist as fragments of an attitude. A frame of mind.


Fashion is a strange mix of nostalgia and impertinence. The conventional belief that a fashion photographer’s trade is to freezeframe a buzzy moment into something that will only last a single month has become undone in an age where all pictures outlast their welcome. They don’t go away when a billboard is replaced, or a magazine trashed; they languish online forever. And so, in reaction to this permanence, the creative generation making work today unanimously try to avoid the uncomplicated label of “fashion photographer” – instead preferring looser, more ambiguous terms like “artist” or “image maker.” The disciplines of fine art, creative direction, graphic design, sculpture and photography have collided to form a more changeable discipline. The business of making pictures takes more than the click of a button.


Hugo Comte studied architecture in Paris before pursuing photography. He dedicated months to researching fashion editorials from the 1980s and 1990s to understand what had been made before him. As a result his own glossy work channels a kind of nostalgic hero-worship; its composition, lighting and attitude is from a previous epoch. The closeness of Comte’s pictures to the iconic body of work produced by Steven Meisel between 1996-2001 makes them almost pastiche, except, Comte’s is so tightly observed that they trick the modern eye. Comte refers to himself as an “image-maker” rather than “photographer”—his influence presides over all aspects of the image, not just the final frame we see.


Berlin-based Valeria Herklotz makes photographs that are informed by her previous experience as a model scout. Her work is discussed, introduced and framed more as portraiture than straight photography. The Chengdu-based Feng Li was—or perhaps still is—a “street photographer” and more recently has become a “fashion photographer”. What it means to become a fashion photographer is a topic of discussion that more editors and photographers should be asking themselves. The South-London born Campbell Addy is a “photographer and filmmaker” but his richly toned work, focused often somewhere between the Black body, cultural identity and queerness, feels also like a political and curatorial act. He told British Vogue that his “culture” is a “hyphen.”


After working for several years as a Graphic Designer and Art Director, Vienna-based Thomas Albdorf’s photographic sculptures—mainly still life—take their inspiration from artists Fischli &#38;amp; Weiss, Roman Signer and Koki Tanaka. They bring together attitudes and processes previously reserved for the art gallery. If you were to ask him, Albdorf is simply an “artist”. The Taiwanese Chiang Yu-yi (who is known professionally under the moniker John Yuyi) is a “visual artist”. The British-based Jet Swan is modestly a “photographer.”


There has been a redefinition of the term fashion photographer to something more elastic, which suggests that photography—and more specifically fashion photography—has become too narrow a term. There is an invisible line between the function of Albdorf’s absurdist and surreal constructions deployed to sell handbags and shoes and purses and their formal conceptual contexts for example. Born in Linz, Upper Austria, Albdorf studied Transmedia Art and so has been focused on the contemporary status quo of the photographic image and the decontextualization triggered by internet distribution.


John Yuyi’s work is shaped by the internet too—it is a kind of revulsion of her own online addiction. A pre-or maybe post-internet attitude shapes her pictures that are layered and memeable. They involve human skin in a way that goes beyond make-up—there is a sense of collaboration and commodification as faces and bodies appear in the pictures more than once. They are refracted and replayed in a number of ways. Her practice explores aspects of social media, and her own hefty online presence.


The process of making pictures has been changed by how we now live our lives online, but how has it changed their content? In Comte’s work, the internet influences a knowledge of the archive and what has come before. Often, Comte’s photos look like they are from the 1990s when they flick up on Instagram. Herein lies their appeal—they are familiar, comfortable. They maintain the hierarchy of glamour and grunge and sleaze that so much of contemporary fashion photography is based upon. “90s images really express an energy more than anything; some eras it’s about style or concept, but this specific era was about expressing a human energy,” Comte told i-D in 2020. His photos have a metallic din, skin is very precise in texture that it is almost cyborgian. His photos reflect the glow of the screen; faces are lit with a gentle radiance.


 Valeria Herklotz makes pictures that feel like today in part due to their vivacity, energy and simplicity. The women in her pictures are often young and caught mid-pose. They are de-glamourised. Her taste in clothes—which is something we need to always remember when looking at fashion photography—is dishevelled, layered, not quite right. With her work she is tugging at traditions of portraiture.


 Location is central to the fashion image. When we leave the safety and anonymity of the studio and take to the streets, we can more easily capture a clearer sense of time. Based in the Chinese city of Chengdu, Feng Li’s work takes a more playful, less Eurocentric idea of beauty and has some fun with it. His pictures have life and vigour. Fashion photographs made in Europe that claim to be inspired by movement often feel very still, very posed. Li’s photos are wild with smiles, arms flying, feet askew. They radiate a happy, idiosyncratic charm. The clothes he shoots are extreme too and are given equal status in the gestures of the models. They get the performance they deserve.


 That Li began as a street photographer is key to his practice and approach. He took up photography in 1996 before securing a civil service job working as a photographer for the Sichuan provincial department of communication. That job involved photographing technological hubs, high tech factories, and CEOs. His fashion work needed to be the antithesis of this, for his own sanity.


 I have been thinking about which of these images look like now. This is an absurd feat but nevertheless it is the primary function that fashion pictures need to serve. Campbell Addy’s lens always seems to luxuriate in their subjects; women and men are strong and bathed in colour and light. Addy’s work borrows the classism of the 1950s studio setting but jolts it into the now with an unabashed reverence for queer glamour.


 Jet Swan’s body of work has a perversity to it that feels like it could only exist today too. There is always something off or surreal or ugly in her pictures which seems to puncture any preconceptions we have about a woman making pictures that are adjunct to or informed by fashion. Swan’s debut monograph Material gathered together three years’ worth of photographs and portraits she had made of strangers. A lot of her subjects are rarely identifiable; their heads cut off and their bodies exposed. There is a rawness in the work that is confrontational. She presents the female body in its truest and most multifaceted way. Never airbrushed perfect, in fact, Swan seems to highlight the bumpiness of skin, the outline of the body, the push and pull of veins.


 Her pictures prove that to us that any sort of demarcation between the disciplines of fine art and fashion photography is futile. What we need to consider is the content of all of these pictures and what they might tell us about fashion today. In Swan’s work, we are perhaps over fashion, drained by its excesses, its lies, its fantasies. Her work seems to feel like now because it is grounded in an inky, earthy truth.

Dal Chodha:&#38;nbsp;Most of your life – your creative life – you have been in London and New York. Today you are working inside of a 400-year-old well in the Spanish countryside. You live in the same village as six generations of your family in a house that is 770 years old. How has your perspective changed now that you are based where you are?


Miguel Adrover: I’m really aware of what is going on in the planet but, yes, for a little while I stepped out of it because I found it really overwhelming. A lot of my work is dedicated to this kind of awareness and for a long time, fashion was the only way I could do, or at least say something. Ten years ago we could see the Amazon burning but if you mentioned it, people thought you were crazy. But that is the life of an activist. For many years I was considered toxic… but what I was talking about is being embraced by everyone now.


DC: The appropriation of logos, repurposing deadstock fabrics, re-thinking the two-season norm, questioning corporate power – you did all of this two decades ago with your collections. You’ve said that your studies were much more geopolitical.


MA: Exactly. Now, being here, I’ve had the opportunity to watch the world through a window and not participate in it. I can see it all happening again and young people don’t even know who I am. They think that they’re the first to use fashion in this way.


DC: What you were doing – what you are still doing through your photography and self-portraiture – is so vital, carnal, tribal, powerful. Is that why you were considered toxic?


MA: In the three appointments I had for corporate companies, that’s what I was always told. I was totally freaked out because that was the opposite of what I was doing. I was trying to get people to look up and see how unsustainable everything had become. The industry is still working in the same context. I would love to have a show in New York and express all of the division in the country but these days it’s dangerous because there’s a lot of censorship. Even from young people who can label you as “racist” and “homophobic” because they don't know what you have done before. That happened to me because of something I posted on Instagram, and I was so shocked, like WTF? I buried so many of my best friends when I was 20 years old, they were all dying because of Aids, and here these kids are calling me these awful names. I felt so much freer to say things 30 years ago.


DC: The generational differences are very nuanced and for sure, very complicated. Many young fashion followers share images of your collections – they know of your clothes, but they continually extract them from their contexts. Do you feel protected from some of these cultural shifts because of where you are? It is difficult to maintain a healthy perspective if you are in a city like New York, in the thick of it all.


MA: In truth, I am in total isolation. I don’t have a social life. I don’t even have friends. I opened this window on Instagram two years ago because I was so full of things that I needed to drop. My assistant Constanza had the page already, but I did not do anything with it because I didn’t have a mobile phone – I haven’t had one for 9 years now. I don’t experience the world through a screen on a phone. Going back to your question and how I feel here, people in the countryside are more conservative and it is the women, my mum for example, who run things. They are in control. Seeing all the stories around the #metoo movement made me think about my shows because I always presented women in spaces often only occupied by men. I did sartorial tailoring for spring/summer 2001 and everyone thought they were all lesbians! I cannot be more feminist than what I have been in my work. Throughout my life I have fought for equality; I was in Washington, I got beat up, spat at, insulted. I dropped out of school when I was 12 but ended up in London the early 1980s. I was on the Kings Road, I met Leigh Bowery, I used to go to Taboo with Michael Clark, Blitz. I studied; I was a goth. I grew up in London. The first designers I knew were BodyMap – they were so influential on everything, and no one is talking about them today. There should be a monument to them.


DC: That was a period that was about collaboration: art, music, performance – it was avant-garde. Some people think we are coming back to that.


MA: These days we don’t know what avant-garde is. Back then it was about being a modern person. It was not about selling. I used to come back to Majorca and DJ and in between that, I worked with my mum and dad on collecting almonds on their farm. I’ve always been between worlds.


DC: Now you're between worlds again because you have this Instagram presence, but you don't have a phone. You work methodically on studied self-portraits totally on your own. You express the tensions and joy of the world through a single picture that you share online to thousands of strangers.


 MA: I work really hard on those pictures, and they are based on my mood but then I can change mood many times during the day. I can go for weeks without seeing anybody besides my mum and dad because I work underground – when I close that door, the world disappears. It’s only my imagination and my creativity. I have got to find something between walking from home to the well to work with, a piece of plastic I find, or a stone. Anything.


DC: In a lot of your earlier pictures you used mannequins rather than shooting yourself?


 MA: Yes, I have about 20 of them and over seven years I have made about 300 pictures with them. I was going through a lot of stuff, I stopped drinking and taking drugs. I realised it was not working for me here in the village, it was okay in New York, it was okay in the middle of the stress of everything, but here it wasn’t great. My two friends were Patrón and Jose Cuervo and they were bad bitches to hang out with. So, I thought, forget it. All that energy I got through alcohol I expressed it through the mannequins. I created these big installations making my own universe, using the things around here, my grandma’s tablecloth, feathers from animals being killed for food, my communion clothes. I am 57 years old, and I have always collected stuff, so I have a lot to work with. The mannequins express a number of emotions that I think we (humans) have lost.


DC: A lot of these tableaus take on the look of classic fashion pictures – they are very theatrical and dramatic in a Steven Meisel kind of way.


MA: When I was with Lee McQueen, I had the opportunity to work with Katy England on styling with a lot of photographers like Meisel, Steven Klein and Richard Avedon. Now I don't have any assistants, and I don’t spend any money. Even on lighting because the only thing I have in the well is this little window – that’s the only light I use. It is a light that is invited into darkness. The pictures have this feeling of 18th century paintings because the light comes from the top and I am at the bottom of the frame. The self-portraits happen because I never go out. I used to be a New Romantic and, in those days, it was more exciting to dress up in your room with your friends than it was to actually go out! This energy I have inside me has to come out and it does in these pictures. When I am homesick for New York, and London I dress up like a New Romantic. I’m not dressing up for anyone but myself.


DC: What's your intention with your self-portraits? Why are you sharing them with us?


 MA: That's a very good question because I'm giving it away for free. Miguel Adrover is not about selling product – this is a campaign for myself that I don’t get anything out of. It poses questions, which is more powerful than selling something because it is true. I’m connected to actuality – to what happens today. I'm not inspired by old Hollywood movies, I’m inspired by what's going on in Somalia, or Sudan or London. That’s why I don’t really understand these old houses like Balenciaga making what they do today. We have this big corporate monopoly controlling the industry that is brainwashing young minds. We're not progressing. Fashion – if we want to take it to another level – needs to take that risk of letting things die because new blood is there, waiting.


 DC: Did you work with stylists when you were in New York?


 MA: I worked with Eric Daman who had a fantastic American knowledge of style –&#38;nbsp; and that was important for me. I was really clear with what I wanted but I knew I was in safe hands. The energy at my shows was so crazy – I remember before they would start there would be around 500 people chanting backstage – the camaraderie was so intense. And the models were all representing something bigger than themselves, they’d come from Sudan for castings for Tommy or Ralph and then wouldn’t get booked, but we’d use them. It was inclusive and representation was important. Back then designers would use only one or two black girls in a show to be politically correct, but we didn’t think like that. I really felt like the king of the underdogs.


 DC: Do you still feel like an underdog?


 MA: I do, but also a lot of the people now working as I was are my babies. And they should know who their mother is. It’s important that we know history – I’m not into removing things, we cannot sanitise the planet and our culture. I believe we need to confront and somehow live with what we don't like. It’s dangerous when you want to eliminate everything because then it is too easy to forget what you are fighting for. I’m part of a past. New generations need to be aware that somebody was already fighting for things, and they never did it for money. The last time I sold a collection was probably when I was creative director at Hessnatur around 2008. I remember Vogue writing at the time of my appointment that it was like hiring Amy Winehouse as lead in a church choir.


 DC: I’m interested in what you said about “removing” yourself. After your last show in New York in 2012, did you consciously feel like you had taken yourself out of fashion or was it just a consequence of your beliefs?


 MA: I invested everything in fashion and I never got anything back. That show, which was called Out of My Mind, wasn’t done for sales. It was the first show I did after stopping in 2004. I made the clothes out of garments I had collected from wealthy women in Palma. I’d meet them at their houses and sit in a cupboard and ask them to put all the garments that they liked on a rack. I made new clothes from their existing wardrobes. It wasn’t recycling; it was much more than that. I’m always interested in the soul inside the clothes. I haven’t been selling anything for a long time but this kind of detachment from the fashion industry happened naturally. I was really tired of having a team, of my own dependence on them and my accountability for their salaries. A lot of young people want to have a career in fashion, but it is not the same as when I used to go to London and help Lee. I used to be there for a month sleeping under the cutting tables, or a lot of the time being sent to his house to make sure he’d be okay to come into the studio the next day.


 DC: Did you know what you were going to do when you moved back to Majorca?


 MA: I had no idea. I had this little €200 camera so then photography happened. One day when I went down into the well, the damp and dark atmosphere felt right to me because it seemed as if we were all sleepwalking into chaos with the climate crisis. And then when I came off the drugs and alcohol, I invested energy into me. My first series was with the mannequins – I dressed three of them up in my collections and did their hair and make-up and put them in my car. I drove around the village, up into the mountains, the hills, inside a castle, into a monastery – people thought I was going crazy! It looked like I was sat next to Anna Wintour in the front seat of my car. From then I started to see myself more and things became lighter, I started working inside the well with this small window of light and I felt so happy – I felt that I could finally express myself without needing anyone else. I had no deadlines, I did it because it was a necessity for me. I have no show coming up, but I run around like I do all of the time.


 DC: Do you have everything in your archive? Is it well organised?


 MA: The archive is always moving because it’s not like an archive. It’s my wardrobe. I have everything! Some people stole a few things, but I have the Yankees baseball caps sweatshirts, the United Nations shawl, the Burberry raincoat. I reproduced some of them for my self-portraits too. If I know that I am doing a picture tomorrow, I need to prepare. I have a problem with shoes because I am size 47 and my shoes only go up to 41 so I need to customize them with elastic. Everyday my pictures are getting better and better and when I look at ones, I have done earlier I want to re-do them. I will never let anything go with my name on it if I am not totally pleased with it. My body, my soul and my suffering are inside everything I do. I am very tragic, very Spanish in that way.


 DC: If you liked Miguel Adrover the designer, you will like Miguel Adrover today because now, what you’re doing seems even more pure.


 MA: I have become good at knowing how I look inside the camera – you cannot jump into a picture with the clothes, there is a mediation before on who I am or what I am doing, or what I have inside me. It’s not just dressing up. I like to see my clothes in a new environment that isn’t a big city. A lot of them have been inspired by the Mediterranean, where I am from, so they make a lot of sense here but, at some point, the clothes are the least important thing. It’s about how you feel the clothes. A style comes after many years of being around, of understanding and getting into trouble with clothing.

It was clear from the Autumn/Winter 22 couture shows that the designers couldn’t agree on anything. The costume gilt of Schiaparelli was trumped by the serenity of Dior. The elegance of Valentino was trumped by the camp of Oliver Rousteing’s outing at Jean Paul Gaultier. The formalism of Chanel was trumped by the strict sexiness of Alaïa. Yet the designers were unanimous that in couture the metier is all that matters.


Only houses approved by a dedicated commission run by the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture can call themselves true couturiers. Their clothes must be made in Paris – although, in recent years, Dolce Gabbana, Valentino and Fendi have encroached on the term, choosing to work and show in Italy as ‘correspondent members’. The rules are thus: houses must design made-to-order clothes for private clients with more than one fitting using an atelier that employs at least 15 full time staff. They must also have 20 full time technical workers in one of their workshops.


 Couture is neither haughty nor superannuated. The overarching diktat is one of anti-mass production and pro artisanal craftsmanship built around the structure of a house and its staff, from the seamstress – les petite mains as they are known – to vendeuse (sales staff), from the model to delivery boy. At Valentino this year, the magicians from the workroom took their bow at the finale with Pierpaolo Piccioli, weeping in reverie at the audience’s applause. Peter Muiller at Maison Alaïa (which is not officially couture but tacked onto its schedule) even sent out white lab coats as invitations to his show in homage to the uniform of les petites mains.


 The business of ready-to-wear fashion is a more industrial project, hurried by the rapid seasonal schedule; couture is where conversations between artists and artisans flourish. This is how Maria Grazia Chiuri has approached her tenure at Dior. “I like the tree of life symbolism because it is present in all couture,” she said after her show. “This idea of the circle of life is especially important in this moment, in the world, we all have to change the way we work, we have to think about how we can build knowledge in different ways, step by step. Couture is a more intimate project, a dialogue over a few months. You approach couture because you know what you’re buying.”


 The iconography of couture – the idea of it, the look of it, even what we think it smells like – is engrained into our fashion thinking. It’s understood as a place where designers can function at the highest possible vantage point, making their own dreams come to life with fabric and cloth but only with the aid of les petite mains. Pierpaolo Piccioli rooted his collection for Valentino in the atelier too, explaining it as “the coordinates in which all our journeys converge, a tree with roots as deep as the underground of this city, where the seamstresses and tailors who understand my gestures, as they understood those of Mr Valentino, interweave the plot of each dress with their lives. In Haute Couture there are no paper patterns, no map, no trace except the one left at the bottom of the soul.”


 The tired old cliches of expensive frocks for frozen faced socialites; or frou frou gowns worn once before being locked up in acid free paper echo differently in an age with a steadfast appetite for beauty. That a generation of fashion enthusiasts have been on social media since birth is vital to reframing what couture stands for today. The arrival of the iPhone in 2007 catapulted fashion – and the act of dressing and performing in one’s clothes – into a new, convivial kind of theatre. Today the fantasy of fashion has largely been drained out of it by a slew of testy marketing gimmicks and quickfire trends – it is harder for us to be surprised or awed by it. Couture then becomes all the more tempting to a heavy-hearted audience bouncing between TikTok and Bravo TV, revelling in its own spectacle.


 “A lot of people started to ask me after the first couture, ‘how do we buy couture, who do we call?’ especially the younger generation we want to establish a dialogue with,” Demna said after his breathtaking Balenciaga show. The question of ‘how’ is an important one, and well-exemplified in Paul Gallico’s novel Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris published in 1958. Mrs Harris is a maid working in war ravaged London who sets her sights on buying a Dior gown. When a taxi drops her off on Avenue Montaigne she discovers “...not a proper store at all, with windows for display and wax figures with pearly smiles and pink cheeks. Arms outstretched in elegant attitudes to show off the clothes that were for sale. There was nothing. Nothing at all, but some windows shaded by ruffled grey curtains and a door with an iron grille behind the glass.” Once she manages to step inside, high off the odour of parfum, her shoes sinking into thick carpet, she asks in a thick cockney accent: “could you tell me which way to the dresses?” Mrs Harris is unabashed by the secret rules of Paris high fashion and rightfully claims her place within it.


 Similarly, Demna has peeled the drapes from the windows at 10 Avenue George V – the historic address for the House of Balenciaga, opening a ground floor gallery suited to new demands of a metaverse-versed couture client. He said: “We thought we needed to create some kind of an entrance to the salon, a space where people would know about it.” Couture by measure of its bespoke service is not something that can be rushed, even if clients might want to wear it the same day to the next party. So this new space – this new attitude – does away with the haughtiness of the past. A lot of the pieces deal with volume and therefore don’t require a languorous made-to-measure approach. “The idea of couture is built into the technique, the material, how it is assembled, the innovation,” Demna said.


 With its artistry, the world of couture is made for our mercurial digital age. An age where for most of us, the image is the experience. For A/W 22, Maison Margiela staged Cinema Inferno, a knotty Dantean labyrinth of multi-media: a theatrical performance, played out in front of live spectators, captured by cameras that integrated film simultaneously broadcast online. It was artisanal in attitude, curiously punk in execution. Galliano’s outings for Dior during the mid 90s to early 00s designed by Michael Howells are forever enshrined in fashion folklore as some of the most lavish ever staged. This magic and mania are what couture has always stood for and here, at a different house, in a different time, Galliano’s historicism and love of thirties glamour was infused with a digital kick.


 Writing around couture often lauds the material over the mythic: the pleating of a skirt, the cutting of a jacket, the texture of a print. But we should note its overwhelming emotional impact, its euphoria. “You know, my mom always asked me: ‘don't you want to design clothes for Target or Walmart and make mass produced garments that would reach a wider audience?’” Daniel Roseberry said after his Schiaparelli show. “I told her that my life wasn't changed by going to Target. It was changed by looking at fashion shows and seeing beauty and being given permission to dream those dreams for myself growing up in Texas. The democracy here is the democracy of beauty and giving beauty to the world.”


 Although couture is worn by the few who can afford it, it is revered by a global multitude gazing through the opulent portals of iPhone and laptop, where its values become surprisingly universal and transformative. “Every day the urge grows stronger to get a hold of an object at very close range by way of its likeliness, its reproduction,” Walter Benjamin wrote in 1936 reflecting on works of art in the age of mechanical imitation. In the opening up of couture – in its images, its videos, its objects – we are all invited into a monumental dizzying fantasy.


 Instead of ideas about what to wear in the seasons ahead, couture gives us a chance to explore how we feel about artistry and artifice: a bouquet of flowers crafted from hand-painted and sequined silk, a jacket constructed from finely pleated hand-smocking; 70,000 crystals, 80,000 silver leaves, and 200,000 sequins embroidered onto 250ms of tulle. It is a contemplative respite from the fattiness of seasonal fashion. If ready-to-wear collections are Netflix shows, created quickly and in slick succession, endlessly streamed – then couture is the art house movie. It humbles and uplifts us with its otherworldliness.


 Let’s not indulge the puritan panic of “who can afford this?!” We simply can’t afford to lose the best of what talent, time and material can achieve. Couture commands the body, the face, the mind and the mouth. Say “HAUTE COUTURE” out loud. Your lips will pucker, and your head tilt upwards. At once the term conjures up elegance and artistry. Drama and transcendence.

He gets the beauty out of somebody


Part way through reading Nathan Jurgenson’s The Social Photo: On Photography and Social Media recently, I began thinking about the value we place on pictures – and how this changes when we interrogate what a photograph actually is. Whether it is a physical object or a digital copy, a photograph remains ethereal. 


The omnipresence of pictures has disrupted the human instinct to preserve and store. Jurgenson calls the type of digital pictures we are used to making on a daily basis ‘social photographs’ – they function more as language, used to charge an emotion, or exchange a point of view. This is a photography that will often only be looked at once before it is quickly passed over in favour of the next. He writes: ‘Photography, both permanent and ephemeral and everywhere in between, plays on the tension between the momentary and the forever, the transient and the fixed.’ This ephemerality responds to a ‘photographic abundance.’ The richness of our surroundings means that every single image requires its own classification. ‘In their scarcity, photographs can age like wine, with grace and importance. In their abundance, photos can sometimes curdle, spoil and rot.’ How does this help us to reconsider the photographic archive not as an ordered and neat space but instead as a site of immense hostility and complexity? 


The legacy of one of the most iconic photographic talents to emerge in London in the mid-1960s – a time when the city became the epicentre for art, music and fashion – is today a few hundred plastic boxes, piles of papers, yellowed hand-written notecards, bright blue folders on Google drives, uppercase letters and digits collated onto Excel spreadsheets. Gigabytes, jpegs, tiffs. Memories and memoranda. 


A black and white portrait of a wide-eyed teen wearing a Fair Isle jumper. Her hair trimmed short, she stares directly into the camera with eyes lined in hand-drawn lashes. She is unposed. Unabashed like a kite blown out to sea. She has just had her first ever photo session at Rossetti Studios in Chelsea with a softly spoken man called Barry Lategan. She is the ‘Face of 66’. Twiggy! In all her gawkish glory. 


Lategan’s Twiggy pictures are burned in our brains – they are as much yours or mine as they are his or hers. Each of us, I think, shares ownership of the pictures we see. Yet in reality, the photographs from this seminal sitting are just negatives and prints inside an envelope inside a box to which someone has the key. 


An archive is a mausoleum of memoir. A record of a lifetime’s work that still needs oxygen. Dylan Lategan is two things: a son who is anxiously managing his father’s estate and a man preserving the legacy of a legendary photographer who is unable to do it himself. 


Over the course of his career, Barry Lategan established himself as one of the most renowned and influential photographers of his time. In addition to his fashion work, he photographed a range of notable figures including Paul and Linda McCartney, Calvin Klein, HRH Princess Anne, Margaret Thatcher, Salman Rushdie, Mick Jagger and many of his compatriot photographers, those guys who can be introduced with a single name: Bailey, Donovan, Duffy. 


Following a traumatic brain injury in 2006 after falling down a set of concrete stairs, his mental health declined. After the loss of his London studio space in 2007, Lategan’s archive spent a number of years in storage. Dylan took photographs of piles of brown boxes, buckling under their own weight – lids crushed in, the metal arms of folders poking out. BARRY LATEGAN is written in black sharpie on the sides in various hands. Barry’s own loopy Y’s, sharp As and opulent Fs cascade down the side of one box with: 


VIDAL SASSOON, nudes, Lily Cole, London Fashion Group, SALMAN Rushdie PLAYBOY, Joanna Lumley, Doris Lessing, Edward Hopper, ADAM ANT, Sarah Moon, Pirelli.


‘The weekend he had to be out of the studio came around dramatically and some students helped him to box everything up quickly,’ Dylan says. He remembers the Victorian space was a photographic hoarder’s nightmare: multiple copies of prints, books, documents all stacked up. ‘The students came in and they literally got everything into these boxes and everything else got ripped out. My dad was struggling a lot with his mental health and was then faced with the reality of living without his pictures around him for the first time.’ In 2016 Barry was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), which was either caused or exacerbated by his fall. Today, the 87-year-old is receiving ongoing care in a secure hospital. 


Dylan is somewhere between guardian, makeshift curator and conservator.


The Barry Lategan Archive contains works spanning six decades, from fashion and beauty commissions in the 1960s-90s and commercials in the 1980s-90s to his Chanel N°5 campaigns to the Pirelli Calendar of 1988. It also contains a wide collection of personal works, including nudes, still-life, documentary and candid street photography. Managing it, organising it, working out how to care for it is a huge job, both physically and emotionally. 


In the aftermath of the move, he became absorbed in working out more efficient ways to scan film, sourcing the right boxes to store negatives and prints. Finding the right programs to organise files. ‘It’s hard to understand what Dad’s capacity was in the early days of his illness, in terms of preserving his work,’ he says. ‘Over time he had accumulated a huge, highly organised catalogue of work with each job and every frame clearly numbered. And then a sort of index system, physical cards, which he saved, thank God. I think he was quite proud of that organisation; I think he needed to make sense of all this material that he was accumulating, but he was obviously very possessive about it.’


Throughout this process of what he calls ‘management’, Dylan is balancing the burden and the honour of taking care of a body of cultural work that is already partly out in the open.


My nature is romantic, I am sentimental. I project this into my photographs. I make the models dream.


Barry was interested in a quietness, a simplicity. Born in South Africa in 1935, he came to England to study at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School aged 20. During his studies he was called away to National Service in West Germany and it was whilst working within the Royal Air force air traffic control in Cologne that he discovered a local club for camera hobbyists. There he experimented with a Leica and Rolleicord and fell in love with the alchemy of&#38;nbsp; processing film himself. After the war he returned to South Africa where the photographer Ginger Odes offered him a job to which Lategan cringed, insisting that photography was only a hobby: ‘You’re a lucky man if you can make your hobby your work,’ Odes said seriously.


Lategan’s elegant style was influenced by the urgency of Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Eugene Smith and the grace of Norman Parkinson and Irving Penn. Contra to the ephemeral, Lategan’s way was one of dignified ardour and exacting attention to detail. Post Twiggy in 1968, Grace Coddington called him and asked: ‘Can we do some nudity pictures?’ –&#38;nbsp; a beauty session with another new face followed. The model Lesley Jones wrapped in furs; her large eyes scented in blue shadow went on to become the cover of the October issue of British Vogue that same year.


In the following decade he worked closely with the legendary makeup artist Barbara Daly which resulted in a dynamic and theatrical portfolio. 36 Italian Vogue covers during 1969-1980, and 38 British Vogue covers during 1968-1979 are Lategan’s. 


In the mid 1970s Lategan moved to New York, eventually setting up a studio in Manhattan where he began an incredibly productive period of commercial and advertising work and started directing television commercials. During this period he also became interested in projects outside of those for which he had been previously known, such as nude studies, trees and candid street photography. He was always taking pictures. Lategan eventually returned to London in 1989 and joined the Director's Studio agency where he continued to work on personal projects and advertising campaigns. He received the Halina Award for his Pirelli calendar and a Clio Award for a Giorgio Armani television commercial in which a model dashes through a neo-classical sci-fi mansion swathed in navy blue light. 


In the late nineties – as digital photography empowered a new generation of image makers – Lategan remained active but outside of fashion. Dylan began talking to him about the need to delegate the digitisation of his archive in the early 2000s, yet he remained resistant. ‘For whatever reason he felt it wasn't right for him to work with archival agencies and so I pushed him pretty hard on what he really wanted. But he seemed so happy just being in the moment, taking pictures. Even though he desperately needed work, he just lacked the capacity to understand the reality of the situation. He wasn't a functioning professional photographer anymore; he was living in a bit of an illusion. But he was still incredibly happy and passionate and interested in the world around him.’


I am essentially a portraitist


In the 18th November 1998 issue of Photo District News is a short Q &#38;amp; A with Barry, which opens with a photograph of Dylan – then nine years old – sat on his dad’s shoulders. In it, Dylan with spiky hair and cheeky grin is pulling at Barry’s cheeks. Barry’s face radiates the kind of warm pride that expands over time. 


Dylan was born in New York and attended boarding school in England. ‘He definitely stood out from other dads when he’d collect me from school,’ he says. ‘Barry was obviously there, taking pictures! Like a typical artistic eccentric wearing a beret and dressed in all black. He was pretty unique. I was definitely shy and somewhat resentful and embarrassed, growing into my teenage years, so I definitely wanted to reject that identity a little bit in my younger years. Then I obviously grew to appreciate just how special that really was.’ 


What do we learn about Barry Lategan – the man – from looking at his work? There remains a lot of mystery. In snippets found online of him talking he comes across as a deeply inquisitive man. ‘The face in repose looks at its best’ he says in a mellow, honeyed voice. He was and remains curious about the world around him, committed to distilling it in a picture. ‘He was so charismatic, and eccentric. He was self-taught, left school quite early and threw himself into books and philosophy and arts and poetry. He always had very deep knowledge and a rich understanding of ways of looking at the world that were alternative and romantic.’ 


Speaking in 1998 Barry said that the words of scripture of all religions inspired him, as well as ‘the thoughts of Borges, Henry Miller, D.H. Lawrence, Pessoa, Dorus Lessing, Roland Barthes, Elias Cannetti.’ Amongst his possessions are letters he’d written to Dylan’s mother whilst they were together – they were both extremely passionate and deeply in love, ‘they were just drowning in it’ Dylan says. ‘He did write some personal notes and reflections. And they are very romantic descriptions of things, people.’ 


This notion of romance keeps returning when thinking about Barry Lategan and his work. He was almost lost in his sensual experience with the world around him, which helped to create a distance to who he really was. ‘I think he was a little bit lonely for a lot of his life because people would say they never really knew who he ultimately was. He was quite private and fiercely independent in his success.’


Lategan was working during a period when romance took on a more carnal kind of quality. The haughty poise of the 1950s was blown up by a young, heterosexual M.O. The buzzy New York love affair between David Bailey and Jean Shrimpton is notorious (published in the April 1962 edition of British Vogue), as are the go-getting girls immortalised by Brian Duffy – these pictures expose the shifting ways in how fashion began to unsheathe women, presenting them in much more knowing, sexually confident ways. Barry – who gate-crashed the sixties fashion scene thanks to that sitting with Twiggy – was slightly older than the jack-the-lad photographers of his time and so his work has a different, more rigorous glamour. His models are self-assured – as in control of the picture as he is. ‘I’d go to parties, and I’d see Donovan and Duffy and Bailey with their glorious girls, and I couldn’t believe the way they were treating them. I kept my nose clean,’ he once said. 


Yet, like a lot of his peers, he hailed from a working-class background too – growing up very poor in South Africa, attending a strict convent school after his own parents separated. ‘I think he had a harsh, rough, lonely upbringing and I think that may be the origins of a lot of his soul searching and inquiry for the deeper layers of what it means to be human. I think he was looking for that connection with people. Towards the end of his days in public, he would religiously photograph the people in his community so that he could connect with them. And you can see some of that in the beauty work. He’s looking into the iris. He made the models feel very secure and confident in posing in what was a very constructed image. I think he also managed to help everybody drop those conformities and give themselves to the photographer. As you can see in those famous Twiggy shots, she's literally gazing right through.’ 


It's not the pen that writes, it’s the hand that holds the pen that writes 


The whole process of managing the estate together with having the responsibility of the archive is one of unpeeling the layers of what made Lategan’s mind tick. At one point he did allow a company to digitise and license some of his work, yet Dylan has had to resolve these contracts and agreements. One agency was offering up prints of Barry’s famous works at various sizes, selling them at art fairs and trade shows. ‘I had to buy back the digital files and they even tried to claim ownership of the rights and the photographs. It was a difficult time having to fight and to retain control,’ Dylan says. ‘An important part of this process is to help people understand the depth and the range of his work and for him to be recognised as more of a fine artist. That wasn't going to come from delegating it to somebody else. It’s worked out in the end for me to take ownership of the problem and self-manage it. It is the road less travelled, a harder one, but this is a long-term vision to retain control and find solutions for the family, and beyond just myself.’ 


The issues of managing the archive are less emotional and oftentimes more practical. Knowing where to store things and how to organise files on computers and hard drives. ‘I have a huge sense of responsibility, moving through this digital transition, to make the right decisions over the iterations of the work. I must consider the physical archive and how to preserve that and make it accessible for academic purposes, as much as for the business. Then I must think about what it really means to be digitising this stuff and creating essentially another version of everything alongside maintaining control as it enters that space. Once it's out there, it's out there – you don't necessarily know how it might be infringed or abused.’ Go onto Etsy or eBay and you will find collaged t-shirts, framed prints and hackneyed acyclic paintings each with their own riff on Lategan’s famous Twiggy pictures, created perhaps in homage, but without permission. 


This sense of what we share and what we keep private is a moral and legal challenge. Should everything in a photographer’s archive be digitised? What remains physical? Most people who've filled the internet for the last 30 years have held the belief that everything should be ‘in’ it – now there is thinking about what needs to be there. As society pushes back against the internet they have helped to build, it's vital we consider how we want cultural artefacts to be stored for future access.


‘The Metaverse, I believe, is a duplication or an extension of our reality; they're looking for us to spend a lot of time within this digital realm to a point where we’ll be encouraged to work, live and socially interact there. But it will also be spliced with the real world. So, acknowledging that, why shouldn't all this work be accessible and have a digital twin? To be appreciated. To be shared in that world. That's a long-term goal, to digitise the entire body of work so that it can live beyond its physical lifetime. I'm thinking very far ahead. But with every answer, there seem to be more questions raised.’ 


Dylan flicks through pages of contact sheets with beautifully handwritten reference numbers that have helped him collate the archives. ‘Luckily Dad has not only preserved the actual negatives, but he’d also created contact sheets of them, which then gives me a really accurate and true tonal range of how he wanted the film printed. So I have a good reference for how the retouching should be done. Everything I open up is, to me, just iconic. And my love and appreciation for my dad has just grown with every little discovery. I was just never really that aware. I guess I had my own head in the sand about the fact that it might get dumped on me.


‘It was such a poignant and significant moment when he lost that studio, it was so dramatic the way it happened. He was throwing boxes out of the top storey window. I remember the doors being open and him just not being able to deal with so much stuff and all the students coming around asking “what's this??” I had to make sure he wasn't giving things away. It was very much a rescue of a man, and his work.’

	The Limit



	










Fashion is charged with emotion. It is art and avarice; hyperactivate and regal. It is what Kennedy Fraser, writing in The New Yorker in 1978, called a “materialism that is twined appealingly around the unmaterialistic.” Fashion is communal joy, and that should be prized in times of anxiety. Fraser’s speculation that “the dimension in which fashion operates is an amalgam of the mental and the material – a miasmic half-world where ideas have functions and prices, while objects are hung about with thoughts and dreams,” is essential for understanding where and how fashion operates best.


When a friend messaged from Paris during the AW22 season in March 2022, our conversation turned to the setting for Balenciaga’s epic 360° show: a giant snow globe mimicking a sentimental touristy souvenir, originally conceived to confront the audience with the realities of climate change (during a trip to the mountains at Christmas, Demna had been shaken by the lack of snow there). If we thought that fashion was always in its own bubble – a weird hinterland between the real and the fantastic – then who better to pop it than him?


In light of the political realities that had suddenly taken hold of Ukraine, the climactic staging found new resonance. A personal note from Demna, placed on each of the seats alongside a T-shirt in the colours of the Ukrainian flag, acknowledged that while “fashion week feels like some kind of an absurdity”, to cancel the show would have meant “surrendering to the evil that has already hurt me so much for almost 30 years.” In the early 90s, he was one of 250,000 Georgians forced from their homes by Abkhazian separatists during the country’s civil war, and here was a poetic gesture of solidarity and solemnity. Footage of models struggling to walk against the harsh winds weighed down by leather trash bags now took on the grain of reportage. The clothes were recontextualised in an instant, understood afresh through the prism of a war against people, not just the planet.


The culture of fashion – by and large a material fixation with ephemeral values – becomes all the more crucial during moments of uncertainty because it reminds us of our own humanity. Fashion has always been a billion-dollar haven for misfits, a tireless fantasia of glorious ironies. Yet in our desperation to regard every single thing it produces as overtly political, we often lose a grip on its carnal limits. Every handbag is now examined as if it were an academic manifesto, every picture read as a diktat about how we ought to be living and shopping. Contrarily, every gracious attempt to shed light on a cause is construed as mere marketing – another empty spectacle curated to fleece us. We ought to remember that behind fashion is an almost-animal euphoria, which is why so many are driven wild by its possibilities.


We have to stop looking for fashion to correct our morbid reality. We have to remind ourselves of the joy of dreaming and looking outside of ourselves rather than perpetuating a mood of suspiciousness and doubt. Let’s bask in what fashion is — a galaxy for like-minded fantasists.


As I write, I glance at the trending topics on Twitter. At number one: “Ukraine says ‘tens of thousands’ have died in Mariupol as fighting continues”. At number two: “Emma Corrin’s Bizarre Balloon Bra Is a Glorious Nod to Camp Style.” Scrolling down I see: “Have a safe flight BTS”; “Meet Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s ‘real-life Mary Poppins’ with huge salary”; “#rwandamigrationplan” and “Woman keeps unopened Easter Egg for 62 years.” Itemised like flops on a Spotify playlist, the weird fascinations of life are revealed. The facile remains as absolute as moral outrage or love. The best way to grasp what fashion is, is to respect what it isn’t. Fashion – by definition of its aesthetic and commercial preoccupations – is usually inept at shaping moral and social codes of conduct. Has a Schiaparelli skirt ever changed the way you vote? No. But has it ever made you squeal? Perhaps. Using fashion to find the answers to the ugliness of life is, I think, leading to a certain cowardice. Too many copycat clothes. Too many identikit political poses. A generation scared of doing the wrong thing. Too many logo-ed sneakers. Not enough soul.


The discourse around any global issue will always reveal fashion’s creases. In this age of blitzed attention spans we struggle to compartmentalise unfathomable streams of jarring knowledge: the latest clothes, the cutest bags and the buzziest shoes are all peppered with real-world struggles. We expect fashion — and clothes — to do so much while we do so little. We have convinced ourselves that buying a sustainable cotton dress will help save a dying planet when, truly, the best defence is to not go anywhere near it. We critique with knee jerk flippancy; we want all of fashion’s complications to be neatly organised and magicked away. But let’s reclaim all that’s good about it, too.


Fashion necessitates the coming together of energetic, creative, and curious people. I have been thinking about a generation of people who first got in to fashion by following the life and career of Virgil Abloh who was himself, famously inquisitive. “Don’t get trapped into this ‘everything sucks, the world is coming to an end...’ You can wake up every day and come up with excuses, but it’s exactly the opposite,” he told students at Harvard in 2017. After his death in November 2021, people shared screenshots of DMs they had exchanged with him in an instinctive attempt to express their grief. Virgil lived and worked in an open and convivial style in opposition to the closed-off diktats of luxury fashion. In his fast, rhapsodic responses, you can sense an appetite for the millions of ‘maybes’ and ‘what ifs’ puttering in the air. His work became a conduit for so many previously untouched conversations.


In its September 2000 issue, US Vogue asked: “How Many People Does It Take to Design a Dress?” presenting page after page of lavish yet leaden portraits of designers and their assorted collaborators and flunkies. Look them up – they reveal an industry as it once was – closed-off, largely white, elitist and stuffy. Revisiting them, I was excited to see how out of sync the pictures looked in a post-Abloh world.


Virgil was committed to moving at breakneck speed, doing as much with as many people as he could in a way that has provoked a generation. This attitude – to make ideas happen quickly and with urgency – is mirrored in the discourse around Telfar’s 'Bushwick Birkin' on Twitter or the fully regenerative open-source supply chain developed by Oshadi Studio. It is collegiate. It’s Donatella going to the Saint Laurent show! It is a gaggle of Y2K barbies in Mowalola trucker caps! It is every designer, student, and fan, who congratulated Maximilian Davis upon his appointment as creative director of Salvatore Ferragamo with a post on Instagram. It’s designers collaborating with each other. It is the attempt to find new voices, not just new faces. Fashion is shifting in benevolent ways. We are entering a Warholian period where Instagram is The Factory: shoots are tagged with assistants, couriers, flower arrangers and caterers, in an important public acknowledgement of the many hands and brains at work.


When we assess the images of shows or the pictures in this magazine, we are weighing up hours and hours of conversation, thousands of WhatsApp messages, emails, muddy videos, texts, misunderstood emojis, irritated calls, late nights, Deliveroos, litres of Pinot Grigio, folders of references, hardbacked books cracked open. Years of sweat, dust, knowledge, and whimsy.


Fashion sweeps all lived experiences into the same spot. We often talk about the lack of diversity in the industry but, in my academic work, I hear conversations from students that are reflective of a rich and cultured tempo – a slowing down to a more thoughtful reconnection to what is at the core of fashion, which goes far beyond economics to a place of escapism and magic. It is a cavalcade of devoted dreamers.


Fashion is or should be the distraction from daily life that focuses our minds on humanity and imagination. A place for beauty, not beast.

A couple of years ago, Supriya Lele was given a copy of The Coast – a photographic essay of 199 pictures by Delhi-based artist Sohrab Hura. Shot in the depths of an inky night during religious festivities in a coastal village, it reveals the undercurrents of social hostility in modern India. Hura treats the line between land and water as a point of ecstatic, ecclesiastical release. Meanwhile, with her radiantly provocative clothes, the London-based Lele has cultivated a curious balance of eastern elan and European grunge. She bookends each season with a trip back to her homeland of India and this, her A/W 2022 campaign, was a stimulating meeting of tendencies. This conversation discusses a body of work that mixes Hura’s own archive with new pictures of Lele’s clothes. They proffer a part of Lele’s psyche that we haven’t seen before. In the darkness and grit of Goa at night, we sense danger, but also magic and euphoria.


 Dal Chodha:&#38;nbsp; I’m interested in this pull that India has on you. You keep returning and shooting your collections there. Why is that?


Supriya Lele:&#38;nbsp;Taking my work back into the context of where my family are from is really important. I am literally revisiting it with my work and it’s different each time. Otherwise the collection is always in Europe. I show in London and sell in Paris or Milan, but it doesn’t often go back to where a lot of it is rooted. I need to touch base and recontextualise the work and doing it with other people helps to do that. Even though I'm a “brand” – I hate that word – and even though I'm making product, there's always an ebb and flow in the creative process. I felt this quite intense need to pull it into India again this season, but not in the same way that I had done before, in a semi-sentimental way. It needed to feel more present, more current. More raw.


 Dal:&#38;nbsp;Sohrab, I see a kind of anti-romanticism in your work. I don't think it's necessarily the subject matter, but it’s there in the way you’re capturing the world around you. Do you see your pictures as raw?


 Sohrab Hura:&#38;nbsp;When I saw Narmada, the project Supriya had done with Jamie Hawkesworth in Jabalpur, I actually kind of liked it. I don't personally want to categorise it as being romantic or anything, but I understand where Supriya is coming from when she says that. What I noticed from all of the shoots she’s done is the presence of water. Somehow water keeps repeating itself in a lot of my works too. Think about how Supriya is using words like ‘ebbs and flows’, it picks up on a certain energy. I noticed that she'd worked along the river for Narmada and, of course, there's a certain calm flow with a river. The sea became a landscape to explore something with a different energy.


 Dal:&#38;nbsp;This is the first time you have worked with fashion, isn’t it?


 Sohrab:&#38;nbsp;It was a chance for me to understand the balance that clothes can bring to a picture. I'm at an interesting point with my photography because I'm thoroughly bored of it. Working on this has jumpstarted something within a landscape I am familiar with. I knew that I wanted to shoot in the sea because I know it, but I wasn't consciously trying to make it raw. Playfulness is important to me and somehow the sea allows for that. It allows for something unexpected. I don't think I'm a very good director and very often when I have something already conceived in my mind, it turns out shit – the sea was there to rattle me a bit.


 Supriya: There was an energy there that definitely felt different. It feels powerful and I guess, semi dangerous. It just felt right to be going to the sea and in a more obvious way, the collection includes these fishnet embroidery pieces that were very apt, and these lantern bags. Working with Sohrab was just like vibing it out, seeing what comes. I've always been attracted to working with people who aren't necessarily from a fashion background. It's not like going into a studio setup with hair and make-up and production where you do the shoot, and it looks great and that’s that. This is a lot more spontaneous. It’s risky. You can get magic in those scenarios.


 Dal:&#38;nbsp;Earlier you had a resistance to the word “brand”, why is that?


 Supriya:&#38;nbsp;It's me in my studio with two assistants just trying to get things done – I prefer working in that way because it makes me feel more creative and more connected to my work. Thinking of yourself as a “brand” feels clinical – I want to be a good designer. I want to make good work.

Dal:&#38;nbsp;Sohrab, you lied when you said you hadn’t shot fashion before. I would say that any image with clothing in it is pretty much a fashion image – that’s definitely how a generation is reading pictures today.


Sohrab: I would actually agree with you. It’s not necessarily a lie, but I am using the term “fashion photographer” just to isolate this experience. In the end, like you said, anything with clothes can be fashion depending on how one looks at it. Even when I talk about my process, I use the words “folding” and “stitching” …very domestic words. Even today, the clothes I’m wearing have holes all over them. I feel like something not so perfect, something a little broken. Torn. That's me. It’s because of my mum that I recognise this idea of care through clothing.


 Dal: I read somewhere that you took up photography as a kind of therapy to cope with your mum’s schizophrenia. Your first two books Look It's Getting Sunny Outside!!! and Life is Elsewhere were about her.


 Sohrab:&#38;nbsp;Yes and clothes became a big part of her illness. Somehow, they reflected her condition and her mental health. Those books were made at home and in them the clothes repeat according to her mood. In the end, even work like The Coast had this fashion and personality throughout it. The clothes throughout hold symbolic meaning around gender, caste, and religion. Maybe it hasn’t been that conscious in my work but there have always been these undercurrents of meaning.


 Dal: You said earlier that you were bored of your work – what do you mean by that?


 :&#38;nbsp;I've been a bit bored with the medium of photography itself but that’s a very healthy state to be in. I’ve had these repeated points of boredom where I've been more drawn to moving image, but it also has a lot to do with repetition. The moment I feel that something is repeating itself, it gets boring. I want to reinvent to keep myself busy, to feel playful. I think this idea of being playful with the work and to take risks is what Supriya was talking about.


 Dal: How did the shoot go from your perspective?


 Sohrab: We went with certain expectations, but we also wanted to leave space for the unknown, which is where the sea comes in. We consciously chose to shoot at night because that makes a landscape more unknown. You feel very isolated but it's also a time of magic if you allow for it to happen. We want the work to have its own feel, its own mystery and moments of doubt.


 Dal:&#38;nbsp;How did you approach the casting? Do you see the people in the pictures as characters?


 Supriya:&#38;nbsp;It's less about characters in the narrative sense. Even when casting shows, we like to see each woman as her own person in the outfit she would wear. And the same goes in the campaign – they've each got their own identities, their own thing going on.


 Dal:&#38;nbsp;And we cannot see any of their faces – why is that?


 Sohrab:&#38;nbsp;Because this issue was about the body, and we were interested in exploring these half-spaces where the body is hidden. Quite a few images became too much about one person, so like Supriya was saying, it was more about trying to find a seamless merge between what we worked on and the work that I've done in the past. Something a little more mysterious and a little more doubtful. There’s a picture of a woman wearing a white dress standing in the sea and she is turned away from the camera. In front of her is a wave that hasn’t fully formed – you don’t know if the wave has occurred yet. We didn’t want the landscape to reveal too much either. My own dilemma was, how do I justify making these photographs?


 Dal:&#38;nbsp;Do you mean that in terms of not wanting to repeat yourself?


 Sohrab:&#38;nbsp;Exactly. Am I taking a formula and creating something disjointed by projecting another work onto it? Or am I finding a thread from work I've done in the past and extending that forward? I've been documenting my home for the last 15-20 years. It's a big privilege yet one of the most difficult places to be photographing because you know it too well. Nothing really sticks out. Supriya didn’t want to romanticise anything, I don't know what that means but at the same time, I’m conscious that there is a danger of that because we are in Goa. Everything looks beautiful. We didn't want things to necessarily look beautiful because I think that’s often a mask that deceives us. A lot of my works have been done over a 10–15-year period so in a way, it was a very artificial way to compress all that time into something.


 Dal:&#38;nbsp;Supriya, Sohrab mentioned boredom but then he also just brought up the luxury of time. I guess one of the biggest learnings for him is how ludicrously fast and consumptive the fashion industry is. We’re always thinking about the next picture, bag or shoe. The pictures we’re talking about are over, you’re now onto the next collection which will be shown in a month’s time. We’re always forgetting to be in the thing in the moment.


 Supriya:&#38;nbsp;It's a tricky one because I am somebody who gets bored really quickly. We’ll make something, and I will hate it and then might fall in love with it again. My process is always quite last minute, so I start my collections quite late. I need that pressure to cook something. I think if I had too much time, I wouldn't put work out.


 Dal:&#38;nbsp;But do you crave more time?


 Supriya:&#38;nbsp;I always long for more time but that's the irony of this industry! I'm always like, “if I just had one more month…” but I know I wouldn’t use it. It's amazing and inspiring for me to hear Sohrab talk about his practice and having these longform projects – I wish that fashion could be more present like that, because it's only when I look back at things I've done that I appreciate them. In the moment, I was over it. I guess I feel like I really have to do these creative projects with people who have different approaches because it keeps me grounded. If I didn't, I would be churning out collection after collection and it wouldn't feel right.


 Dal:&#38;nbsp;So how would you spend this imaginary month?


 Supriya:&#38;nbsp;I would probably over-develop work! But I do think a really important part of my process is making a lot of shit. You make mistakes and through them you learn something, or an accident happens. I'm not very good with very controlled processes, I feel like it sucks out the joy. That’s how I work, a lot happens in fittings and on the body quite quickly because it's about what feels right.


 Dal:&#38;nbsp;What have you've learned from Sohrab?


 Supriya:&#38;nbsp;He looks very deeply and intelligently at things. Hearing him talking about the symbolism of clothing refreshes my brain. It has made me feel really connected to my own practice, like, okay, I can start thinking a bit more deeply about certain codes or things that I've touched upon in my earlier work. To check in again with myself rather than thinking you’ve just got to make a collection that’s got to be really cool and sexy. It has to feel more grounded and rooted in something.


Sohrab:&#38;nbsp;I remember in the evenings when we were in Goa we didn’t talk about work. We talked about everything that leads to our work. Supriya had this healthy angst or a kind of self-doubt. I'm always considering my work – and I presume it’s the same for her – but quite often, the work is just a residue of something much larger.

Painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds around 1773-4, the 1st Earl of Bellamont is flanked by swags of silk fringed in bronze. His pale fist pressed to his hip, leg cocked, he sports a colossal ostrich feather headdress, rococo style cape and beribboned slippers. On display as part of the V&#38;amp;A’s first major exhibition devoted to masculine attire, the pigment of his scarlet ensemble has faded to a more millennial hue. The reputedly vain and pompous Earl is now both patriarchal pinup and camp icon. 


Reynolds rarely painted dress in detail because he considered fashion too transient – yet it is exactly this ephemerality of material and meaning that curators Claire Wilcox and Rosalind McKever were excited to uncover. In Fashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear, they position more than 100 garments amongst Renaissance paintings, sculpture, iconic photographs and pieces of canonical film and performance art. They reveal the kinship between historical artifacts and our modern-day anxieties about gender, sex and identity. 


It was whilst writing about the history of bags and pockets in the mid-1990s that Wilcox started to rummage through the museum’s collection with a keen, investigative eye. ‘I realised that often, wherever there is art, there are people and wherever there are people, there is clothing. If you journey through the V&#38;amp;A that's what you see: objects placed in context with other objects, so I spend a lot of time looking for little clues,’ she says. &#38;nbsp;


The first room – Undressed – explores classical European ideals of masculinity, perpetuated by the brawny athletes of Athenian sculpture and Calvin Klein’s muscular pin-ups who dominated much of the 1990s. The second space – Overdressed – is where contemporary mores are unleashed. Filled with 18th century and more recent garb, it curiously omits anything hailing from the 19th century. ‘A huge gap exists in history when men were simply not celebrating the decorative potential of clothing,’ Wilcox explains. She describes the tailored suit – which is the focus of the third and last room – as a dominant force that has shaped much of how we read masculinity today. It's rational, it's practical. It can be tailored to any body shape. ‘In some ways, the suit is the most democratic and the most abstract form of clothing there is. It was so successful as a kind of a viral form of dressing that it really knocked all of the decorative inconveniences out of the window,’ she says.


Yet designers have recently returned to the flourish of a frill. Both Edward Crutchley and Harris Reed happily snub male mass conformity – each has an opulent look in the show. Elsewhere, Gianni Versace’s quilted black leather women’s coat from A/W 1992 appears to take on the shape of the doublet and hose sported by Dudley, the 3rd Baron North, a portrait of whom from 1615 is hung nearby. An aristocratic sitter in an oil painting by Jean-Baptiste Perronneau is displayed alongside a mohair ensemble by Grace Wales Bonner in a section devoted to that most infamous of colours: pink. McKever says: ‘The show is our way of bringing art and fashion, past and present together in a way that hopefully opens things up.’


That younger generations are now fixated on ending staid notions of gender only heightens the urgency of the questions posed. ‘One of the first things I did before working on the show was walk around the museum and witness the presence of menswear and masculinity across the whole of the V&#38;amp;A. Even the facade of the building has busts of great artists across it and, of course, they are all male,’ McKever smiles. ‘This is an opportunity to see the museum afresh in terms of how ideas of fashion and gender are displayed both across and within the building.’


Menswear is something the V&#38;amp;A has touched upon before, most notably with Andrew Bolton’s provocative Men in Skirts show from 2002, but this new survey uncovers an even grander parade from Beau Brummell to Bimini Bon-Boulash. Wilcox explains that in the 18th century, men’s silk brocade waistcoats were made from women’s skirts – an example of a textile that’s not only been recycled but re-gendered. ‘Fashion, as we know, is cyclical but so is the reuse of textiles, ideas and patterns. It is the readings of them that might change. We had a choice to do a straight narrative about the history of menswear from A-Z, but we decided to draw on representations of masculinity through the wider collection and we uncovered so many delightful nuances. In many ways, this exhibition feels like the beginning of a journey, not the end of one.’

On page after page of John Bates: Fashion Designer (2008), one is struck by the breadth of ideas and multiple identities locked into the designer’s clothes. 


Bates began his line in 1959 after he was flagged down crossing the Edgware Road by investors looking for the next big thing. London was full of post-war impertinence and Bates was poised to give it the shortest skirts, the newest silhouettes. Having begun his career in the mid-1950s under Gérard Pipart at Herbert Sidon of Sloane Street, Bates had by 1969 helmed 5 different labels that sold in 44 countries, creating a vast empire with his partner in work and life, John Siggins. His work spanned the flirty mini dresses donned in discos across the nation and the glittering costumes of television and film stars including Diana Rigg, Elaine Stritch and Siân Phillips. Bates dominated the British fashion scene alongside Jean Muir, Bill Gibb, Ossie Clark and Zandra Rhodes before closing the business in 1980 and later leaving London for the rural thrum of Wales. Today, both Johns live in an old farmhouse overlooking Carmarthen Bay together with a 5-year-old white rescue dog and a 21-year-old black cat. Over a three-hour lunch, they recalled the period with all of its grit and promise.&#38;nbsp;




If John was ever missing from the office, you’d find him in some shop somewhere asking “oh, what does that do?” He’d go rummaging around these really dirty looking places in Soho that were filled with stock from before the war and find the most wonderful silk flowers that had been untouched for years.


John Bates: &#38;nbsp;I’d use them on something and then the production in the business would say: “where'd you get the flower from? We can’t find them!” and they’d be so annoyed, but whoever had made them, did it so beautifully. I don't care if somebody says: “oh, that's old fashioned” – who cares? If you're going to use it, do it in a different way. There was a little shop next to us when we were on Berwick Street that had plastic which they were selling for tabletops and I thought, I wonder if I can use that for something. So, I bought a few yards, but we found that when you machined it together, it just opened like a stamp! It took a while to sort that out. 


 &#38;nbsp;We tend to see all of those plastics and manmade materials that were being used in the 1960s and 1970s as a nod to the Space Age or something more futuristic. Was that something you were thinking about? 


 &#38;nbsp;Not really, I just love plastic! And I did it with pure wool, which was expensive. The plastic was dirt cheap. People said it was silly, but it got publicity because it was very new in the late 1950s. We did two versions, both skirts actually and the papers photographed it so then we had to get it to work in real life! I'm sure there are machines you can use these days, but when you first start something, you've got to go through the problem pages. It was nice to do it first because everybody ohhh and ahhhed about it. 


 &#38;nbsp;John would use anything if he could. I mean, the knockoff merchants used to copy us very quickly, but we did one dress with a shirt underneath and they couldn't undercut us because the fabric was so cheap. They were furious.




 &#38;nbsp;You had a couple of different labels – one called Jean Varon, which sold widely and then Capricorn, which was your coats and suits line.




JB: &#38;nbsp;Yes, and they were very expensive. People looked at them and said, “hmmm very nice. Next!” But we kept on doing the softest leathers you could think of, they felt like silk, and beautiful furs, but the price when they were finished was astronomical. 




JS: &#38;nbsp;We had one customer from Leicester who came down every season to buy. She cost us more in smoked salmon sandwiches. That’s how many dresses she bought. She’d always buy 12 frocks and no more. People come in and begin to know what you do better than you do – they look around the rails and if anything hasn't changed then they get bored. I always used to say: “change everything around! Make it look different!” 




DC: &#38;nbsp;You had shop in shops too, where you could offer your own vision of the collections rather than an edit bought by someone else. 




 &#38;nbsp;And that supported the whole collection. I remember when I was working at Hebert Sidon, he loved French clothes, but every season in the showroom you’d hear: “Oh, it's very nice but hmmm I don't like the colour. I really don't like this…” Everything was going downhill. Have you ever seen people's faces when they are buying a collection? 




DC: &#38;nbsp;Oh, during the sales period? Yes. It’s quite brutal.


 &#38;nbsp;They all go: “Yes, it's lovely. But it's not for me.” I was never allowed in the showroom because I would say to people: “Well, you have to have the clientele. If you don't then it's not the right thing to buy” and the sales staff would throw me out! When the Paris things used to come out, all the shops read the magazines and the papers. 


DC: &#38;nbsp;What was it like for you working with the press? You had some important long-standing relationships with many editors. 




 &#38;nbsp;A fashion editor on a paper will have a different attitude towards fashion and what's right to wear. Vogue and Harpers have another idea based on what photographs well. I mean, I didn’t know much about business when I started out or that you’d have to go around to parties talking to people, which I’ve never been very good at. When I first met John, if we ever went out together, he’d sail into a room and talk to everyone. I’d look for the nearest corner and stay there.


DC:&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;How did you both meet?


JB: &#38;nbsp;I was invited for dinner at a mutual friend’s place. It was around 1965. This friend, Dennis, had a piano covered in lots of silver framed pictures and right at the front there was a wonderful photograph of this man. I sort of stopped and said: “Who's that! I’d like to meet him,” which is a pretty bold thing to say, and it was John. It's funny how lucky you are with things. It was very unusual for me to do that, to be so pushy about meeting John. 


JS: &#38;nbsp;I was at my flat in Maida Vale painting the walls and there was a knock at the door. It was Dennis and he said: “Hello. We've come for a drink” but by the time he’d got that out, John had run back down into the lift.


JB: &#38;nbsp;And that was the opener! A day later John got a telephone call from me saying: “If I buy a cake, can I come for tea?” I mean, talk about corny. 


JS: &#38;nbsp;We started working together a year later, around 1966. John had a PR guy who worked for an agency, and he’d decided that he was going to Hollywood to become a script writer. I was doing ad hoc days for someone who had a PR agency, oh, what was his name?


 &#38;nbsp;Lampuki!


JS: &#38;nbsp;No, Lampuki was a PR agency on the Kings Road. I did one day a week there. One of the founders was Geoffrey Aquilina Ross, that’s it, he worked for Vogue doing menswear. That was absolutely mad. The office was full of real Chelsea Girls, swishing about town. They’d come in at 11am because they were so tired – they all worked at Mary Quant’s restaurant in the evening or waited tables at Alexander's. Then they’d go out to parties, so you never knew where they were going. It was a madhouse. One day they all went off on holiday and left me in the office. We had a huge Guerlain job on. They were launching a campaign for skincare for women over 40 and the first ad was going to be in Nova. I got the proofs and went along to show the client and he signed it off but when the campaign was printed, she was bright red – it killed the whole thing! Talk about panic stations, the phone was going off the hook. After that disaster I started to work for the guy who did John’s PR.


JB:&#38;nbsp;He did a few people, but he wasn't pushy. He knew girls that were working as assistants at the magazines. He was a charmer. He knew Penelope Vincenzi and she’d just got that job at the Daily Mirror, so he introduced her to us. You couldn’t get anything good in newspapers at the time. 


DC: &#38;nbsp;What was that PR game like, because from reading the book it feels like you had so many champions? Prudence Glynn and Ernestine Carter were real fans of what you were doing. And Marit Allen. 


The trade read The Sunday Times so that made a big difference. If Ernestine put you in the paper, the shops would come in immediately and other manufacturers would take note. When I took over the PR, the first thing I did was to develop the provincial press because they were starved of stuff – they couldn’t afford come to London. 


DC: &#38;nbsp;How did you show the collections?


JS: &#38;nbsp;There were no coordinated shows. We had the showroom and would show three times a day to buyers each season. Press got in when they could, I mean, I basically went to lunch with them, or John did and showed them the collection afterwards. Ernestine was great.


JB: &#38;nbsp;She was. A lot of people said all sorts of things about her. 


JS: &#38;nbsp;She did like a drink, but she was very proper. After a big business lunch, you’d take her back to the showroom and you’d always have to angle the rail at 45 degrees because she couldn't actually walk in a straight line. She’d always pick something – it didn’t affect her eye.


DC: &#38;nbsp;How did you feel about that? People critiquing or editing your clothes?


JB:&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;There aren’t many people who can look at a rail full of clothes and know exactly how the designer wants them to be shown. It's very difficult. But some of them know immediately. Ernestine was wonderful. And Prue [Glynn]. And Marit Allen who I met when she was at Queen and just about to go off to Vogue. She came in and looked at 12 things on the rail and said: “Oh, I could do all of these” – she was with Caterine Milinaire. The frocks were short and when I saw the pictures in Queen, she’d put them on Grace Coddington and another girl. Grace was sitting with her leg up over the other and I thought, “oh my god, nobody’s going to come in and ask for a bum freezer skirt!” 


JS: &#38;nbsp;Beatrix Miller left Queen and went to edit British Vogue and took Marit with her in the end.


 Marit got hold of the Queen guy, the publisher Jocelyn Stevens, when he was in the lift and she said to him: “I could do your pages you know! I read them all the time and I can do it better!” She must have put on a pretty good show because she suddenly got the job! I must say she pulled out all the stops. People thought that Queen was about the horsey set, but you know at the back of the magazine were two fashion pages and that was where the two fashion girls shone. As an editor of something like that you have to be careful of what you do, because everybody’s looking. 


 &#38;nbsp;And they all wanted exclusivity. I mean, the big mistake people make about Vogue is that it’s fashion. They're in the publishing industry. They're not in the fashion industry. They're selling magazines so advertising is important for the editorial content. It’s all business. If we were starting up business now, I don’t think we’d even bother with the press. These days, you've only got to look at the papers, the weekend magazines don't photograph fashion anymore. It’s got nothing to do with fashion photography. 


DC: &#38;nbsp;Were you friends with other designers? 


JB: &#38;nbsp;We knew people like Mary Quant and Zandra Rhodes, but we weren’t friends because what they made didn’t really appeal to me and we rarely saw them socially. 


JS: &#38;nbsp;Plus, we were working. I mean, people think, you know, the “Swinging Sixties” but it was bloody hard work! We'd be working all day and instead of going home at 7pm we’d go down to San Lorenzo and have supper because that was the easiest thing to do. And we’d carry on talking business. It sounds grand but it wasn’t really. We'd sit there talking, have another bottle of wine and then the table would grow and during the course of evening we’d finish up with about eight people around the table. It was great, great fun, but we’d all come from work.


DC:&#38;nbsp; There’s this misconception that the Sixties was just one big, massive party. 



 

JB: &#38;nbsp;It was hard work! Some of the times were fun, I mean, Granny Takes a Trip. I say that because I don't know anything about it, but those types of shops with all the murals on the wall, you’d go up Carnaby Street or the Kings Road and they're all there, vying with the other. Some of the things were made in very peculiar things like very cheap satin. Now, it's one thing to use cheap satin. It's quite another to make it work for you.


JS: &#38;nbsp;…but it didn’t matter because it was cheap! And if you wore it, it was fun. I remember wearing a check pair of hipster flares back to Aldershot, which is a military town. I got off the train and walked through the station and I saw three army trucks pull up and boy did they give me a hard time! Talk about wolf whistles.


JB: &#38;nbsp;You had to be brave. You still do. I did a lot of bare midriffs, short things and low-cut necklines and some of the girls would ask to borrow clothes to wear to parties. But you know, once you got into a party with guys, they’d always say to the girl “have a seat” and the men always flopped down onto the floor. It took me a while to work out why – it was so they could look up their skirts, so I used to say to the girls: “stay off the seats and stand around!” Most of those girls who wore designer things were brave. 


DC: &#38;nbsp;A lot of the clothes you made were quite revealing. You needed to have confidence. I like what you said to Model Girl in February 1967: “A dress is a prop, no more. It’s the way that she wears it that counts.”


JB: &#38;nbsp;Well if you don't wear something looking happy in it then it won’t succeed. You’ve got to put something on, know it's absolutely what you want for the place you are going, and sail into the room. You can have such beautiful dresses sometimes and the wrong people wear them. People don’t know how to look alluring anymore. 


DC: &#38;nbsp;What do you think about this notion of “The London Look” and how much do you think Jean Varon was a part of it?


JS: &#38;nbsp;I remember walking down Great Marlborough Street one day and a girl was walking towards me with just a skirt on. Nothing else. She was walking along the road as if she was out shopping. I don't know what the reason was, she wasn't being photographed or filmed, she was just walking along the street without a care in the world. 


JB: &#38;nbsp;That’s the best way to do it. 




JS: &#38;nbsp;There was absolutely nothing extraordinary about what she was doing as far as she was concerned.


 &#38;nbsp;I would always fit a girl with her facing the mirror because they’d never believe what you were going to say. That happened a lot with Cilla Black. She was so busy wanting to be a “star” that she didn’t know what she wanted. She was always asking if anybody else had worn the same dress. 


JS: &#38;nbsp;Quite often people would complain that they'd been to a function and somebody else was wearing the same dress from us. When Princess Anne had her engagement party, we had a dress called Guinevere that had sold terribly well in Harrods. It turned up in all four colours and different sizes on six people at her party. We got a very disgruntled customer ringing up the next day.


DC: &#38;nbsp;What was an average day at work like for you both? 


JS: &#38;nbsp;John would be designing every day because he did four collections for Varon and four collections for Bates and for a period he was doing collections for another company. He had his office and workroom on the first floor and we were in a building that was the first Jewish Hotel in London. It had the most beautiful Art Deco ceiling in the showroom, which we actually boarded up. 


JB: &#38;nbsp;London was sort of exciting because there were lots of things being tried around you, not just in fashion. 


JS: &#38;nbsp;The British Fashion Council started doing breakfast shows for mainly American buyers – I think you were allowed three or four things to show and so you’d find Ossie Clark and somebody else doing exactly the same things. 


JB: &#38;nbsp;The politics arrived once the big shows started, and everybody wanted to be in them. We got so fed-up with it that John organised a show himself. 


JS: &#38;nbsp;The thing that would irritate me was that everybody seemed to expect somebody else to do something for them, instead of getting off their backsides and doing it! I was great pals with Bill Gibb’s partner, Kate and we thought instead of grumbling about it, why don't we do a show instead of waiting for the Fashion Council to decide what they're going to do? So we picked a day, got hold of Jean Muir and Zandra Rhodes. We had a very strict idea, just 20 garments each, our own models. And the invitation list, if any of the designers objected to anybody on it, they didn't get an invitation. That was it. 


DC: &#38;nbsp;So it was a John Bates, Bill Gibb, Jean Muir and Zandra Rhodes show?


JS: &#38;nbsp;Exactly. We had it at Les Ambassadeurs and we had a 300-person limit. We had 350 people inside and still people waiting to get in including American Vogue, so we squeezed them in. I remember people were shouting at me on the street.


JB: &#38;nbsp;Those shows should have gone on. I mean, that caused a lot of interest.


JS: &#38;nbsp;We did it once and then the next season, Ernestine Carter, Prue Glynn and Bea Miller decided they were going to put a show on which then got subsumed into British Fashion Week and all of that nonsense. So we were back to square one. 


JB: &#38;nbsp;It's sad, really. I mean, it's better if you have the designers and let them do what they want to do.


DC: &#38;nbsp;Did the four of you all get on? What was Jean like?


JS: &#38;nbsp;Jean was like a sparrow. We thought it'd be nice to give a party for the American press over here, get the designers in and then they can make appointments over a drink. We invited Jean amongst other people, and we had this room that was totally mirrored on one side. Halfway through the party I realised that Jean had turned the whole party around and they were talking to their own reflections. Instead of facing into the party, she had turned out and everybody had turned with her. It was absolutely weird. Jean was very funny; she was very scratchy. She liked me because I was not a designer. 


JB: &#38;nbsp;Jean liked to dance and none of us, like Bill and me, ever did so if we went out for dinner she’d always say, “is anybody going to dance then!” and then John would always get up. She was very happy to waltz off with John onto the floor. 


JS: &#38;nbsp;She was a very private person and quite demanding but that was fine – she’d had a pretty tough time I think with Jane and Jane, a wholesale house she had before she became Jean Muir. They've got some of those dresses down at Fashion Museum Bath. 


JB: &#38;nbsp;They have lots of our pieces – hundreds. 


JS: &#38;nbsp;A lot was given by customers after they put a call out for the exhibition they did of us in 2006. They were inundated with dresses but a lot of them had been altered. 


Badly! 


JS: &#38;nbsp;We turned up and there were about four rails crammed with dresses. They’d come out on a hanger and John would say “NO” to each of them. 


DC: &#38;nbsp;And what about the mini dress…


JS: &#38;nbsp;The mini dress really didn't take off until about 1969 – shops would not sell short dresses and even the press wouldn't photograph them. If they did, they photographed the girls kneeling down. 


JB: &#38;nbsp;David Bailey always photographed the girls on their knees as if there was something obscene about knees! 


JS: &#38;nbsp;There was a woman who worked for the Press Association who would put out a report for all of the papers. When we first started showing, she’d come up to me afterwards and ask, “how many inches above the knee is John during this season?” The buyers would always be nervous about it too and so the first three dresses that he would send out would be really, really high! It was so they would still be in a state of shock by the time the next looks came out and they weren’t that much longer, but they’d buy it.


JB: &#38;nbsp;That's the reason why shops wanted them longer. Because if the customer wanted them short, at least they could make it themselves. If it was already short, they couldn't do very much about it. 


DC: &#38;nbsp;Did you have to convince people to get into this shorter length?


 &#38;nbsp;Oh, yes. I mean, when we first started out at the top of Bond Street, the Americans came, and they couldn't believe the length of things. And this is the one thing which always disturbs me slightly about Mary Quant getting the kudos for doing the short skirts. She wasn't the first, but she had the money man behind her so she had her own where you could actually buy it. We all did things quite often before her, but we didn't have our own shop to sell it in. 


DC: &#38;nbsp;Who do you think was the first the first to do the mini?


JB: &#38;nbsp;Well, it wasn’t the French couturier. I had very short skirts from when we started. But you know, when you start and you do a short skirt, people just look at you as if you're raving mad. My skirts were very, very short. Nobody was shorter than me at the time. 


DC: &#38;nbsp;Were buyers scared of any of your more daring looks? 


JB: &#38;nbsp;The American companies were, yes. I mean, they had Halston and all of that crowd doing long, so they expected everybody to sort of follow the Americans, which they didn't. 


JS: &#38;nbsp;It’s funny what people buy actually. One season the Royal Academy were having a Pompeii exhibition, and I used to go to lunch with the PR girl quite a lot and so I said, “Oh I’ll get John to do a Pompeii group” and so John bought this cream jersey and did a group of dresses. It was in 1976. One took half a yard of fabric. All it was, was a little triangle under the bust – we had a fantastic model, and somebody sent out for a big bunch of grapes. The Evening Standard did a whole page that day so then we had to get the dress made. The guy in the workroom laughed and said: “if you sell any of those, I’ll make them for nothing!” and it walked out of Harvey Nichols! God only knows who bought it, but we made about 300 of those and the guy made them for nothing! 


DC: &#38;nbsp;It seems like it was a time when a magazine had a real job to do, you know, people were looking at it to see what they could get. Whereas now the relationship between reader and editor is much more ambiguous.


JS: &#38;nbsp;It’s interesting how effective covers are. John did a cover for Grace Coddington for a Christmas edition of Vogue. He made a pair of sleeves so all you could see were two arms up in the air with lacing around some gloves. The credit said ‘Dress by John Bates’ but there was no dress! I got a very irate telephone call from a customer because she couldn't find it anywhere. She was outraged when I explained that there was no dress to go with the sleeves. 


DC: &#38;nbsp;Did you ever feel under pressure to look at what other designers were doing? 


JB: &#38;nbsp;Everybody always asked me why I didn't have as much publicity as Mary Quant. She has been a very, very lucky girl. She had her husband who was out there doing everything, he was good looking and he could talk to all the editrixes. And they had a guy who supplied the money for Mary Quant, so she had that shop suddenly and whatever she did, they put it in the window straight away. I had to sell to shops first and wait for them to put my clothes in the window. Mary pushed everything that she was doing on a daily basis. I didn’t mind her doing it, she was a good designer, but it made it very difficult for somebody in my position. I started to get a lot of publicity in Vogue and a lot of it was alongside Mary Quant.


DC: &#38;nbsp;Did you get on with her? 


JB: &#38;nbsp;It’s funny, I never knew her really. The best friend we had was Bill Gibb. He was absolutely wonderful. I’d won a Yardley award and had to go to New York in 1968 to judge the next round of the competition. There I saw this fabulous coat. It was Bill’s. They gave the award to another guy called Roger Nelson, who didn’t do the same sort of thing. We came back to London and Barney Wan, who was doing the art direction on Vogue said: “oh come to a party, we’re going to meet Bill Gibb and his partner” and we wouldn’t have gone normally but we did. There was everybody lolling around and there’s this poor guy sitting behind a counter doing things to eat and drink. It was Bill. I said “Why are you behind here, why are you doing all of this. I said if you’re the designer, why aren’t you talking to people?” and he said “Oh, well, somebody’s got to do it.” 


DC: &#38;nbsp;And you became friends after that?


JB: &#38;nbsp;I was doing a collection for a very good company, but I wanted to leave to set up Capricorn. I introduced them to Bill, and he got the job and then I told Marit [Allen] that she needed to see him, and she gave him about three full-colour pages for his first collection! But then things went strange, and he left that job because I think he was promised a lot of money to set up on his own. 


DC: &#38;nbsp;Did you ever talk to him about work? 


 &#38;nbsp;We really told him to be careful, but he went on to do those shows at the Albert Hall where all his clothes were shown on actresses. I remember saying to John, the money that has been spent on this is astronomical but what’s it going to do for him? A lot of designers were very against him. 


DC: &#38;nbsp;Why? 


JB: &#38;nbsp;I always used to think, be careful of designers because there's a sort of feeling of jealousy with some of them, which is not good. Everybody's got to succeed for God's sake. That's why I loved Gérard Pipart. He was so wonderful. In the front of the book there are three sketches of mine from around 1958, which are really his. I was having trouble getting the head to sort of fit onto the neck and the neck to fit onto the shoulder and he said, “Oh, don't worry, darling, there's a special way of doing it!” And he came up with this beautiful sketch, and I went home, and I worked like hell to try and do the same, but I couldn’t. &#38;nbsp;


DC: &#38;nbsp;This was at Herbert Sidon?


JB:&#38;nbsp;	Yes, he was a very difficult man, but he loved French couture and he loved Gérard, so he offered to pay all of his bills if he came to London. That’s how I met Gérard because I was already there. He should have had much, much more publicity than he ever had. I think they paid him an enormous amount of money and he was quite happy to work in America. That's what he was after but now and again, you’d see something in Vogue, beautifully balanced, beautifully made and he’d have one page. I always thought that was such a shame. 


DC: &#38;nbsp;Well, a lot of success is just about luck, isn’t it?


JB: &#38;nbsp;Sure, but you have to know when the luck has reared up in front of you and grab it.
